| Call for Rock Core Workshop Proposals |
The Ontario Oil, Gas & Salt Resources Corporation is calling for proposals from industry members to create a new core workshop that promotes and captures Ontario’s geological knowledge and opportunities related to activities regulated or likely to become regulated under the Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Act. Full details and application form available here Interested parties should submit a short proposal addressing the key items listed in Selection Criteria by January 31, 2025. Please submit proposals to info@ogsrlibrary.com. A proposal will be selected by February 7, 2025.

Summary of 2024 Oil, Gas, and Salt Resources Drilling Activity in Ontario by Jordan In 2024, the OGSR Library recorded 35 new licences issued for wells to be drilled under the Oil, Gas and Salt Resource Act. An additional 23 licences were issued for existing wells. Stratigraphic testing accounted for 31 of the new licences issued, with most of the testing taking place in Lennox/Addington and Durham counties. Two licences for observation wells in Lambton County were issued in March; in October one licence was issued for an oil
producer / gas producer, and one issued for a brine well. A total of 30 wells reached total depth (TD) during the year, primarily for stratigraphic testing. February and April saw the highest number of wells drilled to TD, with 8 and 15 stratigraphic test wells, respectively. In May, a new pool wildcat reached TD in Euphemia, Lambton County and was plugged soon after, and a stratigraphic test
reached TD. June saw two observation wells drilled to TD in Lambton County, and in November, three solution mining wells were completed in Essex County. Plugging operations were conducted throughout the year, with 63 wells plugged in total. April and June were the busiest months, with 18 wells plugged in each month. Key exploration and development efforts included a new field wildcat reaching TD in May and a licence for a new field wildcat well issued in October. A large amount of stratigraphic testing was conducted, however, with most of this drilling occurring in Lennox/Addington and Durham counties the results will likely be of minimal value to oil and natural gas explorers. These activities, summarized below in table 1, reflect a mix of development, observation, and exploration
efforts for oil, gas, and salt resources in Ontario. |

OGSR Library Maps and Models 2024 by Connor |
2024 was a busy year for the GIS department at OGSRL. We were
able to capitalize on our 3D print lab expansion to create a number of models that we can use for outreach as well as make available for purchase. We created two medium (24 cm x 16 cm x 10.5 cm) sized models that offer a useful balance between geologic detail, durability, and affordability.
You can check out our models for sale by following the link: https://www.ogsrlibrary.com/3d-models. We also created a 3D printed rock core that is assembled by stacking the formation layers upon one another. The final model is over 6 feet tall and includes 40+ layers found within SW Ontario. Check out our post about it on linkedin to see it in action and join the conversation:
With the new printers we were able to create colourful prints that contain more data with impressive visuals. These two prints below were created based off of data sets that were sent to us for modelling and printing. Do any of you have interesting geology data you wish to hold in your hands? Let us know and we can discuss making
it a reality! |

The OGSR Library has also started looking into the use of game engines, Godot in particular, to see what digital outreach options exist for our 3D assets. Last year we were able to conceptualize and produce two different working prototypes for our geological data. They can be accessed through https://geology.games.

Now available! On the 2D side of things, the Pools & Pipelines map was updated for 2024, and poster sized prints are available for purchase. To order one please contact us by emailing info@ogsrlibrary.com, or by phone at (519) 686-2772.

Sample Cutting in 2024: What did our clients do with our samples? by
Brian
I’m Brian, one of the GIS and Database Assistant at the OGSR Library, I am also responsible for assisting our clients in core viewing and sampling. At the Library, we work closely with our clients to ensure they receive the most relevant and well-prepared core samples for their specific analytical
needs. Our clients regularly request samples from our library for various purposes, each critical to different aspects of research, exploration, and decision-making. Each purpose requires unique preparation and handling, and we take great care in cutting and preparing the samples to meet these specific requirements. Here is the breakdown of the core sampling we did for our clients in
2024:
- Isotope Testing (19 requests): The most common purpose for samples in 2024, Isotope analysis is vital for dating materials or tracing their origins. Many clients rely on accurate isotopic data for studies in geology, and environmental science.
- Thin Section Preparation (17 requests): Thin
sectioning is critical for detailed mineralogical and structural analysis. Clients use thin sections to study material properties at a microscopic level, often for geological and material science applications.
- Chemical Analysis (14 requests): Chemical analysis helps clients understand the composition of their samples, identifying elements or compounds critical to fields like mining and environmental science.
- Microscope Photography (1 request): Clients requesting samples for microscopy to capture fine details of the core such as cracks or inclusions.
Ensuring Precision and Quality Whether for thin sectioning, chemical analysis, microscope photography, or isotope testing,
the careful handling of each sample preparation is crucial. With careful cutting and handling, I ensure that each sample meets the specific requirements of the clients for reliable and consistent results. At OGSR Library, we’re proud to support our clients with high-quality, well-prepared samples, helping them achieve their research and project goals.

If you are having trouble viewing this newsletter, it can be viewed here. What is the OGSR Library? The Oil, Gas & Salt Resources Library is a not-for-profit corporation that manages all of Ontario's public drilling and production data from the petroleum and solution mined salt industries. This includes processing, storing, and providing safe and convenient access to all of the industry's drill core and rock cuttings. The Library makes as much of this data as possible
available through our online portal to members all over the world. The financial support of the petroleum industry and our membership make this possible.
