Understanding Private Gas Well Operator Names: Have you ever seen a string like this ref_88183b946cc5f0e8c96b2e66e1c74a7e in the database? This is not a database error, it is an identifier for a Private Gas Well operator. All Private Gas Wells by definition are operated by landowners and because the Ministry of
Natural Resources and Forestry cannot reveal private information about landowners, the names of the operators must be obfuscated. Rather than simply listing the operator as "PRIVATE" each operator is given a unique code. This code allows users of the data to generate statistics about the number of operators, how many wells each operator has, and distinguish ownership between neighbors. For instance, it is possible to determine that 824 different Private
Gas Well operators exist in the database and 107 of them operate more than one well.
