Get to know our resident geologist:
I have spent the past four years as a graduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Western Ontario. I took on a subsurface Silurian-Devonian bedrock aquifer mapping project in southwestern Ontario, which was a collaboration between the University and the Ontario Geological Survey. Most of the research materials - including well logs, drill samples and rock cores –
were stored at the OGSR Library. I spent four joyful and meaningful summers at the Library working to complete the core logging and sampling work. All the OGSR staff were very friendly and always ready to help. After I obtained the PhD Degree of Geology in 2018, I have been honored to become a member of the OGSR Library team!
I have been assigned to the salt-solution edge mapping project to exercise my skills in drill-cutting sample picking, geophysical data interpretation and regional stratigraphic correlation. This project consists of re-picking the Dundee formation down through to the Rochester Formation (Middle Devonian to Silurian) using well logs and drill-cuttings to update the subsurface bedrock maps of southwestern Ontario. Together with the Library’s Geology & Laboratory Assistant, Hanna, we are refining the quality assurance procedures and checking the geological picks along the currently accepted salt front maps made by Sanford (1972). All the salt layers occur in the Silurian Salina Group (A0-G units), and the dissolution of these layers have created an irregular paleo-topography of southwestern Ontario that influenced the thicknesses of later Silurian-Devonian deposits. The updated isopach map of the salt-bearing units will shed light on future salt mining, salt-cavern reservoir mapping and oil and gas exploration. The daily tasks I am involved with at the Library are intriguing and challenging. Every time we move to a new study area, geologic problems arise for us to solve, such as the occurrence of pinnacle/patch reefs, complete dissolution of salt layers, and the pinch-out of certain rock units.. It is always fun to explore various models and hypotheses for the mapping project. The Library also organizes geology/GIS training and field trips for new staff to improve our understanding of the geology of southwestern Ontario. I have greatly developed my knowledge of the local geology and industry of southwestern Ontario. I have also realized how important it is to integrate geologic and geographic data to establish the information system for both academic research and industrial production. With new data added and accurate maps created, we are better prepared to provide geology information services for future clients from industry, government and academia. I hope this and other similar projects will lead to more and more people knowing about and visiting our library. |
